True Horror Tenancy Story - Launceston

A Tenant who smashed every window in his home, told police he couldn't remember what had made him angry.

The Supreme Court in Launceston heard that Victor Dasio Gbugare, 25, of the Launceston suburb of Invermay, smoked marijuana before embarking on his damaging rampage, which also saw him cut holes in a wall and the floor, on August 26 last year.

The Sudanese-born father of one smashed all 19 exterior windows of his home in Invermay and another eight panes of glass in interior doors.

He cut a large hole in a dividing wall and another in his kitchen floor.

The cost of repair to the house was about $12,300.

Mr Gbugare told police he caused the damage because he was angry, but he could not remember why.

The court heard Mr Gbugare suffered emotional problems resulting from a difficult life in Africa, where he experienced and witnessed torture and violence.

Justice David Porter told him the use of marijuana "no doubt makes much worse your underlying mental health and emotional issues".

He sentenced Mr Gbugare to three months jail, suspended on the condition that he be of good behaviour for two years.

He ordered him to pay compensation.
